Horizontal Garden Sampler Table Arrangement - Creative Edge June 2020

DESIGNS & TEXT BY HITOMI GILLIAM AIFD | PHOTOGRAHY BY COLIN GILLIAM

Sometimes a great design idea surfaces as a solution to a challenging problem…

Arranging 200+ glass bottles down the center of narrow banquet tables for a wedding can be very cumbersome and labor-intensive to design, set-up and take-down. The style of horizontal table design created for this Creative Edge June Article is a design solution for efficiency, an example of Economy of Means in every way, maximizing the use of minimal quantity of flowers.

BASIC

Floating Table Runner for Banquet Table

A replication of the desirable effect achieved in the multiple bottle design is cleverly built into the reusable structure shown here.

The simple wood board base with multiple water tubes accomplish exactly the same aesthetics as the low horizontal flowering effect in of multiple bottles. Two lengths of this design end to end can create a beautiful floating floral runner to grace the table for quick and easy installation.  20 watertubes per 24” section seems to be a good formula for this structure.

The floating effect keeps the base open and narrow so it will not get in the way of any tableware and accessories.

These structures make great rental items for weddings and events.

ADVANCED

Floating Horizontal Design for Buffet or Side Table

The initial structure to begin this design starts with placing the thick bamboo skewers vertically into the Ghostwood to support the horizontal flow of Lichen twigs that initially create the natural horizontal sweep.

An elegant, airy and organic horizontal design flows wild and gardeny in soft curvilinear manner starting with the Clematis armandii and Lonicera japonica vines freestyling in space. The curvaceous pieces of Tillandsia xerographica and Spanish moss drape downward to add to the texture and color of lichen to create the patina that exudes the woodland look of the garden. Water tubes on bamboo skewers are then positioned selectively filled with water, to hold the gorgeous Lilac and the cascading Pansies. The flowers are designed loosely with transparency to allow each material to be viewed to capture its exquisite details.

This design conveys ‘Less is More’ as its compelling storyline.

ART

Inspired by Nature

This off the table, off center horizontal design provides more challenge to create. The structure was built on split firewood with horizontal extension asymmetrically balanced, attached to vertically standing water tubes on bamboo skewers. The horizontal extension hold additional water tubes which allows for flowers to be displayed off the table and to support the hanging strings of midollino and lichen twigs to repeat the color and texture. To counter the potential extra weight imposed by the hanging side, the wood base on the right side is anchored with 2 heavy rocks and clumps of reindeer moss to emulate the rugged Pacific Northwest costline landscape. The natural vining used is none other than the invasive trailing blackberry, some of which are caught in bloom. A perfect opportunity to showcase the gorgeous climbing rose variety ‘Mme Alfred Carriere’ in bloom, along with Lilac and the horizontally inclined branching of Viburnum plicatum tomentosum – a perfect match for this design. The whole design is laced with wild growth of the delicate, wiry Muelenbeckia vine and the organic aerial root of Ficus.

This nature inspired design is like painting a character portrait to give a sense of place of that rugged precipice of the over-hanging rock.
