Gloriosa lily has been my inspirational flower ever since I first purchased a bag of 5 shorts some 16+ years ago. Up close and personal, I discovered that the blooms possessed vivacious, high-spirited, outgoing, fun, quirky, young and stylish personality. The red raspberry petals with fine yellow edging that reflexed back playfully, openly revealed its crazy style deflect at the base and project horizontally with flaring stamens – this flower is not shy… It is definitely the most dynamic flower ever!!!
I have featured them in some of my most favourite designs, including cover page of my book ARTFLOR Advanced Design + Process (2005), and cover page of FRESH LOOK AT JUDGING (2013).
At 2007 AIFD National Symposium in Seattle, I chose as my finale design, a multi-dimensional painting/photo collage of Gloriosa Lily with overlay of fresh Gloriosas designed on a floating armature. This was my homage to my absolute favourite flower.
Gloriosa lily are wonderful cut flower – they add vibrancy to any design. They are not as fragile as they might appear – they last 4 to 6 days. When they arrive packed 5/bunch in sealed plastic bag, place them in the cooler as is until ready to use. At that point, cut the stems and place in water. They are light drinkers so they are suitable for use in water tubes. They are also available as multiple blooms on long stems from Holland. Also available as exquisite, robust and long stem specimen bunches of 10 from Japan.
