Adversity Creates Beauty

The perfect flower is flawless, each and every petal is perfection. Its symmetry meets its ultimate varietal expectation. It was grown in the optimal condition with plenty of care and pampering. Its a ‘winner’ at the flower show!!

The perfect tree grows where it gets the right amount of sunshine and the right amount of water and nourishment that it needs. Its girth is robust, perfect all around branching – it was pruned evenly so it never faced any obstacles or adversity.  It is perfectly straight.

Imperfection is almost always a result of some form of adversity. In observing plant life, I am constantly looking for the character stem or character bloom or any kind of freak of nature –  it possesses a stronger, more powerful story. The most beautiful tree is one which have lived all its life precariously hanging over a cliff, one which have faced the crashing waves, or rigorous coastal winds, or devastating crushing snowfall, or trampled by the sad march of civilization – but yet persisted and survived, wearing its battle scars proudly. There are so many stories out in nature….

I AM DRAWN TO THESE IMPERFECTIONS!!!

It is clear to me that ‘Awesome Beauty’ is often the result of surviving Adversity!  It is an awesome story of Survival.
